It is characterized by redness, swelling, itchiness and patches in the infected part of the body. In severe cases, it is accompanied with fever and vomiting which can lead to a more serious medical problem.

Ringworm is generally caused by fungi. However, other external factors may also increase the risk of getting the disease. Factors such as those with compromised immune system can make the person prone to ringworms. People suffering HIV and diabetes are likely to have it also.

If left untreated ringworm may spread all throughout your body. It can be transferred from one to another through direct contact. Ringworm treatment comes in different forms. It can be made only at home or upon supervision by a dermatologist. The typical treatment for ringworm includes use of anti fungal crème, ointments, sprays and lotions. Over the counter medicines are easy to find, for these medications do not need a prescription from a doctor. Oral medicines are also available for curing ringworm. Alternative medicines are likewise used for mild to minor skin infection. One of them is through oil treatment.

Ringworm oil treatment is used to prevent skin spread of infection. This treatment should be used continuously because although the fungi disappeared upon application, it may reappear again. Fungi are hard to eliminate, much more if it cause ringworms. It should be applied for three to four weeks to eliminate it. Ringworms who keep on coming back are harder to kill.

Oil treatment for ringworm is usually made up of grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil. The use of grapefruit seed extract has long been practiced and is proven to have therapeutic effect particularly against infections caused by bacteria, parasites, viruses and fungi.

On the other hand, tea tree oil is an effective anti fungal, anti bacterial and anti viral alternative medicine. It is soothing, disinfecting, anti-inflammatory and analgesic as well. There are many claims about the use of tea tree oil to have cured many infections including ringworm.

If it occurs in the groin, it is called groin ringworm or scientifically known as tinea cruris. It is characterized by swelling, redness, dry and patches or scales in the infected area. It is usually formed like a ring, thus the name ringworm. They feed on the dead cell from the skin, hair or even from the nails. It may affect any part of your body even to the genital organs such as in scrotal ringworm.

What causes groin ringworm?

There is a wrong idea about this skin disease. Although its name is ringworm, it is not caused by worms. It is actually caused by fungi. The three classifications of fungi are according to the hosts of the organism that can cause skin infection. They are the following:
1.	fungi preferring earth (geophile)
2.	fungi preferring animals (zoophile)
3.	fungi preferring humans (anthropophile)

Fungi that grow in the groin are caused by anthropophile fungi usual species are Epidermophyton floccosum and Tricophyton rubrum. They are common in warm and moist areas and can be transferred from one to another through direct physical contact. This is perhaps the reason why many wrestlers are infected with this skin disease.

Are there any symptoms?

Ringworms sometimes appear without symptoms. If there is one, what is common is the discoloration of the infected skin. Redness and dryness of the infected area is likewise an initial sign of ringworm. Itchiness will follow when the skin is already irritated with the infection.

How are they treated?

Groin ringworm can actually be treated at home. Ringworm treatment is as easy as treating your ordinary wound. The use of anti fungal crème and ointment to be applied to the infected area of the skin is the first option. Alternative medication is also effective if the infection is only mild to moderate. Proper grooming and sanitation is an effective ways to prevent it. However, if infection is severe and is not given proper medical attention, ringworm can lead to a more serious health problem. Doctor’s prescription is always a good idea.

The infection usually resolves within 2 weeks but treatment must last for 2 or more weeks due to the ability of the ringworm to return if it is not fully treated.

If the rash is especially severe and does not improve upon topical treatment, a doctor may prescribe antifungal pills or oral medication. In this case, a prescription is needed as antifungal pills cannot be bought without a prescription. You also need to strictly follow the doctor’s order and check with them regularly to ensure that no adverse side effects occur (as antifungal pills can affect internal organs especially the liver).

Different Types of Medications for Ringworm

Allylamines – available in the form of creams, pills, and gels. Terbinafine (Lamisil) as a cream can be bought over-the-counter. It also comes in the form of oral granules (prescription needed).

Azoles – oral drugs which include fluconazole (Diflucan) and itraconazole (Sporanox). Brand names: Micatin, Monistat-Derm, and Lotrimin.

Ketoconazole –oral treatment for ringworm and can be prescribed as a 200-mg pill, a 2% cream, a 2% gel, or a 2% foam solution.

Clotrimazole – available in various dosages and form (creams, liquid, combination medicine) Brand name: Canesten

Griseofulvin – comes in pill form (require prescription). Used to treat scalp and thigh ringworm infections. Common brand names: Grifulvin V, Gris-PEG, S-Fulvin

Tolnaftate (Tinactin) – available in lotion, cream, gel, and spray forms and can be bought over-the counter. Effective against ringworms acquired from pets.

Clotrimazole/betamethasone (Lotrisone) – combination of antifungal and corticosteroid treatment used for ringworm that is burning, itchy, and inflamed.
Use with caution and for no longer than 2 weeks as complications may occur for prolonged use (from the corticosteroid portion of the treatment).

Last Word of Advice for Ringworm Cases

Ringworm is highly contagious and you should immediately treat any ringworm infection you may have. You should also take care that the infection does not spread by sterilizing and disinfecting all things that are exposed to your skin (towels, clothes, bed sheets). In order for you to avoid further contamination inside your home, ensure that the surroundings are always clean and tidy especially those frequently visited by your pets.

Ringworm is a skin infection brought about by a fungus. The infection is itchy and gives a lot of discomfort to a person. It also leaves the skin with red ring like lesions that tend to scar a flawless and clear skin. This is a contagious disease that could be transferred easily when not controlled properly.

Ringworm usually thrives on skin areas that are dark, moist and hidden. This is a very favorable condition for the fungus to multiply.

The standard treatment for them is the antifungal creams and tablets. However, most of them are really expensive. This prompts many people to discover and try out home treatments for ringworm. These home remedies are known for their effectiveness in alleviating the adverse effects of the skin disease and at the same time safe and easy to apply on the affected area. The materials to be used are also very economical making these treatments the ideal precautionary measures for treating ringworm.

To battle ringworm infections, one need not spend too much. You can actually fight off ringworms with the things you have on your kitchen. Here are some of the most common ways to make home treatments and cures for ringworm infections

1.	Papaya –Slice a fresh papaya and rub it onto skin surfaces with ringworm infection. This helps to stop the infection process from getting worse. This tropical fruit is not only a delicious dessert and food. It can also aid in making skin infections like ringworm heal.
2.	Tea tree, Castor and coconut oils – These oils are said to be effective as remedies for ringworm. By rubbing them on the skin about three times a day, you can get the beneficial effects of these oils.
3.	Sulphur – By patting a small amount of sulfur on affected body parts, this could soothe the itching associated with a ringworm infection.

By knowing all these home remedies, you do not have to rely on expensive antifungal creams and other medications. You can use these home remedies as a conjunction in your medical treatments for ringworm. When the initial manifestations of a ringworm infection show, you can have these home remedies to aid you as you battle and win over ringworm infections.

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, which can affect both humans and animals alike. Signs and symptoms include rashes, itchiness, and red, scaly skin. Ringworm is highly contagious, especially upon skin-to-skin contact but can also be spread via use of infected materials like towels, clothes, and bed sheets.

The best cure for ringworm is the use of antifungal topical agents such as Clotrimazole, Ketoconazole, Miconazole, Terbinafine, and Tolnaftate. Clotrimazole for instance is commonly available, and can be purchased over-the-counter, and available in various dosages and form (creams, liquid, and combination medicine). Tolnaftate on the other hand can come in the form of a cream, powder, spray, or liquid aerosol, and is especially effective against ringworms acquired from pets.

Preparations of Miconazole include a topical cream (2%), combination medicine (2% cream with 1% hydrocortisone), and an oral gel (24 mg/ml). Terbinafine hydrochloride on the other hand is freely soluble in methanol and dichloromethane, soluble in ethanol, and slightly soluble in water and is prepared as a 1% cream or powder.

Ketoconazole is one of the first available oral treatments for ringworm discovered and can be prescribed as a 200-mg pill, a 2% cream, a 2% gel, or a 2% foam solution.

Treatment usually lasts for 2 weeks (even if the rashes and itch has cleared); as there may be a possibility of the infection coming back if you do not strictly follow the instructions of your doctor or dermatologist. It is especially important to follow the doctor’s prescription if you are ordered to take anti-fungal pills (oral medication is usually prescribed when the affected area is the scalp or hairy body areas since absorption of cream and powder antifungal is obstructed by the hairs).

Home remedies include using tea tree oil and manuka oil, which has both been proven an effective antifungal agent. Just rub the oil on the infected area continuously until the infection clears up. Regular application of this alternative treatment to the affected area of the ringworm infection can gradually lessen the effects of the skin lesions and can increase the healing rate of the blisters and lesions.

However, remember that a pet is still vulnerable and susceptible to fungi and other microorganisms that can bring sickness into the house. Ringworm is also present in pets in which shows the same symptoms of ringworm infected human. Ringworm in pets however can be transferred into a human being through excessive contact and the children on your home are the most likely victims of this skin disease. Children have higher risks of incurring this skin infection since they play with pets more often.

Preventing Pets from Bringing in Ringworm Causing Fungi in the House

Dogs and cats are one of the most susceptible pets that bring fungi in the house that is why it is important to bathe them regularly. Hygiene is one of the best ways to ensure the cleanliness of pets since they are also exposed to the outside environment of the house. It is also the responsibility of a parent to remind their children and aware them about infections that can be acquired from pets. One way to do this is by training pets to stop lying on the bed in order to prevent fungi from transferring to a human being. Children would play often with their pets thus making them feel welcome in the bedroom. These hazards can be avoided also through cleaning the places in where pets frequently visit such as kennel for dogs and cat baskets. Ringworm carrier transfusion will be reduced through practicing proper hygiene as well such as washing hands after playing or touching pets.

Treatment for Ringworm Infected Pets

Ringworm infections in pets can be avoided through bringing them to a veterinarian on the first symptoms of a ringworm infection thus preventing the fungi from spreading in the animal’s body. Loss of animal fur on the infected part is the first sign that the animal is infected by ringworms thus the first step to avoid transferring of the fungi is by separating the pet from the house and by bringing them to the veterinarian in order to be treated.

Ringworm, also called as tinea, is an infection on the skin caused by fungi. These fungi are microscopic organisms that are similar to molds and yeast. However, contrary to what you think, ringworm has nothing to do with worms. It is called ringworm because of the infection it produces on the skin, which shapes like a ring. Although ringworms can grow on any area of the body, it still favors body parts that are warm, moist and hairy. Ringworms commonly affect the scalp, nails, hairy part of the body and the foot. Ringworm can be acquired through direct contact to an infected person or animal. It can also spread if the things used by the infected person are being shared to other people. The contagious property of ringworm makes it a very irritating skin problem for any household.

Treatment for Ringworm

Acquiring ringworm is a serious matter. If you are diagnosed for having ringworm, then you will suffer from the pain and irritation due to the skin infection and inflammation. The skin infected with ringworms is commonly swollen, itchy and painful. If you are a person infected by these fungal organisms, you better consult your doctor immediately and take precautionary medication. Although its symptoms are very alarming, ringworms can be easily cured by antifungal creams. Antifungal creams can help eliminate ringworms and can even prevent it from coming back. You can also use some alternative methods for curing ringworm. Some of these alternatives can be found in your kitchen including fruits and oils.

Oral Ringworm Treatment

Ringworms can be treated by medications. However, not all cures can respond to ringworms and it may even lead to a more complicated health problem. In order to cure ringworm effectively, you need to take oral ringworm treatment. This type of medication can surely get rid of ringworms on any part of the body. However, oral ringworm treatment must be done with guidance from a doctor. Some of these oral treatments include Terbinafine Itraconazol, Fluconazole and Griseofulvin. These kinds of oral medication have been proven to be effective to cure sever ringworms on any part of the body.

Ringworm infection is a common skin malady. This is a kind of fungal disease that plagues people with the uncomfortable symptoms of infection. In order to further understand why ringworm affects certain parts of the body more than the other parts, let us try to look at important characteristics of the ringworm.

1.	The ringworm likes moist and dark surroundings. – Like all other fungi types, the ringworm lives best on an environment that produces moisture and is always dark. This type of environment is favorable to the fungi’s growth and multiplication. This is the main reason why ringworm infections usually occur on the armpit, feet and groin regions. These are the parts of the body that are predominantly dark, warm and have moisture. Although ringworm infections are possible in any part of the body, most ringworm infections develop on the said body areas.
2.	Ringworm feeds on keratin. – Keratin is a protein that is abundant on the skin. Ringworms need keratin in order to survive. Hence, this fungus type will invade the skin.

How can you know if you are developing a ringworm infection? Here are some of the initial symptoms that can be seen in a ringworm infection.

Initial symptoms:

1.	Itching – This is one of the most common symptoms that manifest first in an infection.
2.	Redness – Redness on affected areas is a common sign of a ringworm infection.
3.	Raised borders – This is a characteristic feature that distinguishes ringworm infection those caused by other agents. The raised borders of lesions are seen in ringworm wounds or lesions.
4.	Crusting skin – As the fungi feeds on keratin, it will tend to eat up the skin in a sense. Hence, you will see skin that flakes off o crusts at the borders. This is the effect of the fungi that thrives on the skin which is abundant in keratin.

There are a lot of causes of ringworms in the skin and one of this is brought by fungi contaminated water. The human skin is being exposed to the outside environment in which fungi is most commonly found. Since fungi are not airborne, it sticks to surfaces and waits to transfer to another host such as animals, insects, and the human being as well. Water is one source of transportation off fungi in which it prefers contaminated water most likely. Treatment for ringworm infections are done through applying cream, ointments, or through oral intake.

Antifungal Treatment for Ringworm

Anti fungal creams are available in pharmacies and drug stores all over the country. Miconazole is the generic name given to an anti fungal medicine in which is available in ointments and in creams. A Miconazole cream is used in fungi infections that are dry (usually the fungi is just starting to appear on the infected skin) while ointments are used on fungi infected areas that are wet since worst fungi infections make the skin watery. Oral intake of antibiotics is also important in order to kill the microorganism that is causing the skin infection. Cefalexin is a good medicine that can kill microorganisms that causes fungal skin infections. This is often available over the counter and are sold by drug outlets for immediate treatment for skin problems caused by fungal organisms.

Prevention of Fungi Infections

Prevention is better than cure. This is the most common statement of dermatologists in the United States that is why preventing skin infections is much better than curing them. One way of preventing these kinds of fungal infections is through observing proper hygiene. One good way is by taking a bath everyday and after excessive sweating. Fungi grows in dirty parts of the human body that is why the body must be maintained clean at all times in order to avoid skin infections such as ringworm. Treatments for ringworm can be purchased without the prescription of a doctor or dermatologist. However, it is still important to consult a dermatologist in order to avoid further skin complications.

It is very common in humans especially babies and small children. Nevertheless, animals are not immune to it. In fact, they can be the cause of some human contacts with the ringworm fungus. House pets are known to carry the funug spores inside households, and transmit it through contact or by dropping the spores on places that is frequented by the inhabitants. However, unlike the human form, ringworm infection in animals does not usually form a ring. Instead, the infection becomes apparent with hair loss, which comes in small patches at first. These patches tend to disappear after a while then resurfaces in other parts of the animal body. Constant scratching reveals the presence of itchiness.

There are different ringworm spores but the three that mostly infects house pets are Microsporum canis, Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Microsporum canis are mostly carried by cats. The spores cling to the hairs of the animals and longhaired varieties such as the Persian cat are particularly in danger of being carriers. Microsporum gypseum is also another species of the fungus and is found in both cats and dogs. These fungal organisms are frequently acquired from contaminated soil. Those pets that have ringworm infections on the face and feet indicate that they got it from digging on such soil. If your pets are exposed to rodents such as rats, the Trichophyton mentagrophytes variety of the ringworm fungus becomes the culprit for an infection. Even by just being exposed to the rodent’s borrow will cause your pets to be infected.

If your house pet happens to be a healthy cat and you are infected with ringworm, chances are it came from the animal. Cats develop immunity to the ringworm fungus, so they do not show any signs of infection even though they are carrying its spores. Stroking or combing its hair transmits these spores to you, which would possibly be the main cause of a skin infection. Failing to attend to the initial symptoms of the skin disease would lead to the full development of the ringworm.
