A cat is a usual house companion that may cause too much joy to its owner. It is the most affectionate and cuddle some of all house pets. However, your cat is not immune to various diseases that can also affect man. One of these ailments is the fungal infection known as ringworm. Persian cats are most at risk other than different breeds. The ringworm causing fungus called Microsporum canis is well adjusted to cats that most of these felines already have immunity to the ringworm fungus. This means that your cat may be a carrier of the fungus but is not affected by it. In fact, some people are surprised to get ringworms even without their knowledge. Humans do not have any immunity to the fungus and it is so easy to get it from petting a cat.
The first sign of feline ringworm are the hairs that fall off in round spots on a cat’s body. As the infection worsen, this bald spots turn into lesions which spreads into irregular shapes that can eventually cover the cat’s entire body. The fungal infection is sometimes associated with the scaly, crusty skin that is usually itchy but this is not consistent with all ringworm infections. The incubation period of the fungus in cats is ten to fourteen days so if you wish to determine where the cat may have gotten it, you may need to look back where it was ten to fourteen days ago. By this way, you can effectively do the disinfection procedures that you should importantly consider on your home.
Treating your cat’s fungal infection depends on various factors such as severity of the ringworm infection, number of cats that are infected and the people around that are at risk of getting the fungus. There is also a drug called Griseofulvin that is administered orally to an infected cat. It is the only approved ringworm medication that can be given orally to felines. In order to avoid this type of situation, make sure that your surroundings are clean so that you are able to prevent the occurrence of ringworm in your area.
