How to Distinguish Ringworm from Eczema


There are various types of skin diseases. From the first glance, you could hardly distinguish one from the other because they have the same resemblance of symptoms and appearances in the infected area.
Two of the most common skin diseases that can be mistaken one from the other are ringworm and eczema. To distinguish one from the other, you shall take a deeper look on its causes properly, appearances and period of infection and treatment.

Ringworm is caused by a fungal infection in the skin. It usually appears in the warm and moist area of the body where the suspected fungi can survive feeding the dead cells from the skin, hair and nails. There are several types of it such as breast ringworm, scrotal ringworm and facial ringworm. It can be acquired also by animals like domesticated pets in your home. This skin disease is transmissible through direct contact with the infected area. Wrestlers are the ones who usually acquire this. People with weak immune system are likely to have a high risk of suffering ringworm. Its appearance or ringworm symptom is characterized by redness, swelling or inflammation, itchiness and in some cases, fever accompanied with vomiting.

Ringworm treatment includes application of anti fungal crème, ointments, powder and other oral medications. Traditional methods made at home can also be applied for mild cases. For serious cases, assistance and treatment from a dermatologist is necessary.

On the other hand, Eczema is another type of skin diseases that is caused by inflammatory condition common to people with weak immune system. This is more serious than typical ringworm. The swelling is triggered by irritants from the environment. There are several kinds of eczema. It ranges from hereditary, allergy and those that occurs in the scalp. Its appearances are the same as those in ringworm characterized by swelling, redness, dry and itchiness.

Eczema treatment is not to cure the disease because there is no known cure yet for eczema. Treatment is only for prevention of re occurrence and itchiness. Antibiotics, itch relief and immunosuppresants are common medical treatment for eczema. Upon knowing these difference between the two one with suspected skin disease can now apply the appropriate medications.
