Ringworm is a superficial skin infection that is caused by a fungus. It is not a worm as the name connotes. The infection came to be called as such because of the ring like appearance it has on the skin of an infected person. A ringworm infection is highly contagious and is easily passed from person to person, especially in public places such as a public showers and pools. Animals are also known carriers of ringworm causing fungus spores. House pets are also known to get the skin infection, and treating them as soon as possible is important to prevent the infection from infecting humans. However, there are animals especially house cats, which are immune to the infection but are carriers of the fungus. Therefore, it is a healthy practice to keep your pets clean at all times. Longhaired species like the Persian cat for example, need to be combed regularly to remove spores clinging on their hair and skin.

Ringworm can be treated on different ways. Animals and humans both can use topical and oral medical preparations for this type of skin disease. Most of these medications are generally prescribed by a doctor. However, since ringworm infection is relatively easy to remove, countless home remedies are being applied on the infection with satisfactory results. Topical solutions for ringworm are the only ones that have been proven scientifically for healing the fungal infection. Early signs that the ringworm is healing is the stopping of the itch commonly associated with the disease. Combining both the natural remedies and over the counter medicine would definitely help you cure the ringworm in no time. Just make sure that you are not allergic to the drugs that you are going to take.

Since it causes skin lesions, the next sign to watch out is if these lesions are drying up. If your ringworm medication is effective and it does prevent further lesions, the round pattern will eventually disappear. Continue with your treatment until all signs of the infection are gone. An effective medication will also stop the infection from spreading to other persons or pets, providing a long lasting protection against this fungal menace.
